What Happens After We Die ???

DEATH

Death is described in the Bible as a state of being “asleep”.  Solomon in Ecclesiastes 9 says “the dead know nothing”; in other words, the dead are in an unconscious state.  This is consistent with both Lazarus and Jesus Christ, who both were asleep until they were resurrected back to life.  All of the dead who have believed in Jesus and had a growing relationship with Jesus will be  resurrected at the second coming of Jesus Christ.

BIBLE VERSES THAT SUPPORT THE CONCEPT THAT DEATH IS A STATE OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS THAT ALL OF US WILL ENTER UNTIL RESURRECTION DAY.  ENOCH AND ELIJAH ARE EXCEPTIONS – THEY WENT STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN.

Job 14:10-12 King James Version

10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

1 Kings 2:10 King James Version

10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 King James Version

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

John 11:11-14 King James Version

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

“DEATH” IS STATED BY JESUS TO BE SIMILAR TO A STATE OF “DEEP SLEEP”; SOLOMON SAYS IN THAT “SLEEP” ARE NO EMOTIONS, NO ACTIVE THOUGHTS, NO ACTIVITY AT ALL.

RESURRECTION

Daniel 12:2 King James Version

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

John 5:28 King James Version

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

1 Corinthians 15:20 King James Version

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 King James Version

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

EXCEPTIONS — THOSE WHO DID NOT DIE

ENOCH

22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.   Genesis 5:22-24 KJV

ELIJAH

10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.   2 Kings 2:10-15 KJV

MOUNT OF TRANSFIGURATION (Luke 9:28-36)

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
