We are a pain management private practice that accepts most medical insurance including worker’s compensation (sorry, we do not accept medi-cal). We have offices in the Bay Area from Salinas in the south to Redding in the north. Our home office is located in Antioch. Dr. Robert Stephen Cluff is a Pain Management Neurologist. He received two years of Pain Fellowship with Pain Neurology mentors at UCSF (Dr’s Howard Fields & Michael Rowbotham) and one year Pain Anesthesia Fellowship training at Mass General Harvard program under the direction of Jane Ballantyne M.D.
We direct the care of our pain management patients whatever their needs may be. Most patients are prescribed medicines to help control their pain. The majority attend physical therapy treatments periodically, and most of the patients will see a Pain Management trained Psychologist at some point. Depression (and anxiety) are common in pain patients as waking up everyday in chronic pain can contribute to emotional instability. Many of the patients require surgery, some of them spinal surgery. Thankfully, having been in practice over twenty years helps us establish a network of competent medical physicians in the Bay Area to refer to. Dr. Cluff’s rule is, “I will recommend you go to the same doctor I would go to if I were in your shoes”. Spinal injections are often helpful as well – Dr. Cluff refers out for those. Dr. Cluff does perform cortisone injections into the knees, shoulders, and elbows. He also does trigger point injections for Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
Paperwork has never been a favorite with Dr. Cluff. Combine that with the fact that after completing fellowship training in the late 1990’s and starting the private practice with the mentality “not to exceed 1,000 morphine equivalents”, we have had some issues with the California Medical Board. We have endured two medical board investigations (2011, 2016) and are presently half way through a five year probation. Our medical chart documentation has improved dramatically. We have a pain doctor that reviews fifty charts a month and has been helping us with recommendations. We have also been strongly advising pain medicine tapering, with our target being the CDC recommended dose of 90 MME (morphine milligram equivalents).
If you have chronic pain and need an evaluation, please check with us. We are not always accepting new patients, depending on availability. Our prayer is that you will do well, either with our medical assistance or with help from another medical team, ultimately with God’s direction and healing.
Thank you and God bless you.
Robert Stephen Cluff M.D.
